Marcelinho Calil, 34, is officially the executive director of Viradouro, elected in May 2023, but he is considered and acts as president of the samba school champion of the Rio Carnival 2024. A habit of rehearsals, he has an old connection with the associations from Niterói, metropolitan region of Rio.
Owner of a sports association in Niterói, he took over Viradouro in the preparations for the 2017 parades. The Calils came from years at Acadêmicos do Cubango and a meteoric stint at Unidos do Porto da Pedra until they changed courts. They arrived and took Viradouro out of the then Série A and took the school back to the Carnival elite in 2019. The following year, they won the second championship, after 23 years of fasting.
Beloved by the community, Marcelinho is called the “handsome president” and “hot director” in the samba world and on social media. Educated, he maintains a good relationship with other directors of sister schools. So much so that shortly after the announcement of the 2024 title, he was greeted and hugged by several directors. Marcelo is married to Thamires Hauch, influencer and holistic therapist, and the two will soon be parents to the couple’s first child (a boy).
On his Instagram, Marcelinho often posts photos with Thamires, travel records around the world and, of course, the Viradouro school. In addition to the muscles and some tattoos, the leader displayed, during the Carnival 2024 count, in Cidade do Samba, a Rolex GMT-Master II in yellow gold, which costs around R$203,000.
