Hair is part of our identity and how we present ourselves to the world. The slightest change can either make us very excited or sadden us…a lot! After all, who hasn’t cried because of a bad haircut or a color that didn’t work? Trusting an expert to bring you the desired result is a risk, just as dangerous as trusting yourself to find a hairstyle that suits your face.

We are at the beginning of the new year, so what better than changing your new signature look? Over the past year, TikTok users have been trending various hair trends, from Sophie Richie-inspired buns to ’70s-style updos. There are a variety of trends to look out for, so below you’ll find a guide with five of the best to create your new signature hair style.

Volume, volume, volume

“With the mob wife style continuing to be popular, I think the voluminous style will remain a huge trend for 2024. Big puffy hairstyles and carefully tousled updos continue to be popular this year,” says Laura Polko, celebrity hair stylist based in Los Angeles. If 2023 was for strict, slicked-back buns, 2024 is the year we let it all go. Justine Marjan, also a celebrity hair stylist in Los Angeles, also envisions “layered layers with lots of volume.” You’ll see a lot more bouncy hairstyles and natural voluminous curls, which need a bouncy cut to support the added texture.

Natural look

If you are tired of frequent visits to the hairdresser and your hair is begging for a break, then this is your year! According to Cody Renegar, a celebrity hair stylist, the next few months will be your chance to fall in love with the hair color and texture that nature gave you. “Au naturale, classic looks, but with a personal touch, will be a trend in 2024. People now want to deal with styling their hair as little as possible,” he says. So, you’ll either let your roots grow long in your natural color or you’ll learn how to work your curly hair. “I see more and more people wanting to embrace their natural hair. If you have a great haircut, all you need is a little product to help them, either to de-frizz them or to give the curls a boost, and a natural drying without a blow dryer,” explains Kelly Macedo, hair stylist and owner of Interior Hair in Los Angeles.

Pixie cut

Harry Josh, celebrity hair stylist and creator of Harry Josh Pro Tools, says: “I see a big, revolutionary haircut like the one Florence Pugh is known for becoming popular in the coming months. We’re seeing a lot of short, dramatic haircuts replacing the long, wavy look that’s dominated the media for the past 10 years.” Cutting your hair is an easy – if dramatic – way to change your mood in an instant, and maybe it’s time for those looking to make a bold change to finally take that step. Amy Abramite, creative director at Maxine’s in Chicago, recommends visits to the salon for touch-ups every four weeks when opting for a pixie cut. “Everyday styling is low maintenance, no hot tools required. Push them up and away from the face with wax, for a blended matte finish and hold,” she adds.

Bleach Blonde

Parting your blonde hair wide is still very much in fashion, as several celebrities prove. And it’s not just the platinum blonde hair that’s getting all the love. “Warm colors are also becoming popular. Think honey and golden blonde,” says Renegar. If you try it yourself, be sure to use specific products that help reduce and repair damage if or when it occurs.

The frame is always stylish (Twiggy’s hair in the 1972 film The Boy Friend immediately comes to mind). “A lot of clients come in and want a chin-length haircut since the beginning of the year. It is timelessly elegant and always in fashion,” says Macedo. It’s super easy to style at home too: use very little heat and a little product and you’re done! Plus, a quick spritz of dry shampoo in the morning keeps it supple and fresh for days after washing.
