Paul McCartney revealed the story behind the song’s lyrics “Yesterday” by the Beatles “I said something wrong, now I long for yesterday”.

Speaking on the ‘A Life in Lyrics’ podcast in which he and Irish poet Paul Muldoon present the stories behind his famous songs, he admitted the lyric relates to a conversation in which he embarrassed his mother of.

“Sometimes you can only appreciate it in hindsight. I clearly remember one day when I felt very embarrassed because I had embarrassed my mother. We were out in the yard and he was talking with a toupee. She was of Irish descent and a nurse so she was on a higher level than the people in the neighborhood.

I know he said something like ‘Paul you’ll ask him if he’s going…’ and he said ‘Arsk’McCartney said and immediately corrected his mother.

“Arsk?! It’s ask mom’. And she was a little embarrassed. I remember afterwards thinking ‘God, I wish I’d never said that’. And that stuck with me. When he died I was thinking about it” completed.

The famous song from the album “Help!” was recorded on June 14, 1965 in London, four days before McCartney’s 23rd birthday.

As the Guardian reports, it was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1997, while in 2000 it was voted the No.1 pop song of all time by Rolling Stone magazine and MTV. It has also been adapted 2,200 times.
