Vogue fashion magazine announced that it is bringing together France’s leading luxury houses for a unique show ahead of the Olympic Games in Paris.

Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour told AFP that the open-air show would be “a mix of fashion shows, entertainment and performances… and some surprises”.

It will take place on June 23 – International Olympic Day – about a month before the city hosts the Games.

Among the participating houses are Jacquemus and Balmain, as well as Louis Vuitton, whose creative director is hip-hop star Pharrell Williams.

“It’s rare to be together like this,” said Olivier Rousteing, Balmain’s creative director, at the press conference announcing the event.

“Taking over the Place Vendôme is pretty legendary I have to say,” Williams said, adding that the show will showcase “true French style – what we see on the catwalk, what we see on the avenues – in an inclusive spirit.”

The show is designed as a tribute to 100 years of French fashion as it marks a century since the city last hosted the Games in 1924.

Each decade of French fashion will be paired with an Olympic sport, from athletics and cycling to breakdancing and taekwondo.

Anna Wintour described the show as Vogue’s third “global event”, following large-scale events in New York and London organized by the magazine.

The opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics will take place on July 26 on the Seine River.
