Five new films premiere this week.

It is a six-Oscar-nominated biographical drama “The Williams Method,” with Will Smith nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role in Guy Ritchie’s violent adventure “An Angry Man Revenge,” starring James Jaishon Turkish drama “Guardian Brother”, the adventure “Uncharted” which is a transfer of a video game to the big screen and the drama from Egypt “The Secrets of My Sister”.

The Williams Method (King Richard). Dramatic biography, American production of 2021, directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green, with Will Smith, John Berndal, Aunhanue Ellis, Sania Sidney, Demi Singleton and others.

In addition to the “American Dream”, for some years now there has been the “African American Dream” whose main representative – at least for Hollywood – could be described as Will Smith. “The Williams Method” ties in perfectly with its protagonist, it is the epitome of this ‘dream’, as through the story of the father of the two famous tennis players, Serena and Venus Williams, who starred on the tennis courts for years. ” proves ”that with hard, painstaking effort you will succeed in America. So simple … A well-publicized model, a myth that hides all the pathogenesis of the USA, the barbarity of an unbridled capitalism, the chaotic social inequality, the deification of money.

The film by ambitious African-American director Reinaldo Marcus Green begins with a white social worker visiting Williams’s house to check on Serena and Venus’s growing up, as there is a complaint alleging that his father hard training imposed on them. Richard Williams will admit that this is true because, he says, he wants to keep his daughters away from the dangerous streets of Los Angeles and wants to see them become tennis champions.

Richard Williams, who focuses on the film, which has experienced rejection, has devised, before his two daughters were even born, a success plan that will make them number one in tennis. Focused, on the verge of obsession, in his plan, putting in the minds of the girls the “germ” of the championship from their young and with devastating preparation and training he will do everything to succeed, finding the right coaches, the people who will help and always imposing his ideas and dominating their souls. So, against prejudices, white supremacy, enormous difficulties and family balance, Richard Williams will give his battle and he will succeed.

A film that confidently taps into the genre of sports biographical drama, which is particularly appealing to the general American public, with the conventions and facilities of an emotional charge and of course with many “yes, but but”, which also concern Will Smith , which makes a good -clich- interpretation, but looks more like begging for an Oscar. After all, the film, which has been set on him, has all the elements that will excite the benevolent African-American Hollywood and in general the value system promoted by the American-American regime.

So all for the Oscar, by Will Smith, who has already been nominated for Best Actor (the film was nominated for a total of six Oscars, including one for “Best Picture”) and can now hope. To hope for a finale similar to his film, when the sponsors throw gold at the girls’s feet and for him, when the members of the Academy hand him the golden statuette. Pill inside. So simple…

IN A FEW WORDS… Equipped with a clear vision and a daring 78-page plan, Richard Williams is determined to write history with his daughters, Venus and Serena. With hard training in abandoned California stadiums, the two unbeaten girls were forged by their father’s relentless dedication and their mother’s balanced approach, to overcome insurmountable obstacles and exceed all expectations.

An Angry Man Revenges (Wrath of Man). Adventure, American and British production of 2021, directed by Guy Ritchie, with Jason Statham, Scott Eastwood, Jeffrey Donovan, Josh Hartnett and others.

Violent adventure of revenge, by the master of the genre Guy Ritchie, who manages to raise the adrenaline, but struggles with the script and many times the expected clichés act as a deterrent to the suspense, while the attempt to give some depth to the characters stumbles film and on the other hand in flat interpretations.

In the foreground of the film, the cry “he is not a cop, who is he?” The answer is simple. It’s Jason Statham, who comes to level everything around him, in order to find his son’s cold executioner, in a remittance robbery.

Statham, who will meet Ritchie for the fourth time here in the movie, is taciturn, coldly expressionless, initially creating a mystery around his face, but slowly loses all the advantages of his role, to develop into a relentless honor, with the well-known and expected clichés for the genre with numerous fans.

Guy Ritchie, for his part, can keep the pace, except in the second half, at high speeds, offer spectacular scenes of violence and throw all his aces to entertain the audience in his own way – this this time, however, without his familiar humor. He loses, however, when he tries to combine the plans made by criminals on paper with the actual action, the accuracy of the time and a series of events that do not even stand with bullets. Ritchie makes the easy difficult, setting the bar high, without having a solid script and the necessary attention to detail, which might have gone unnoticed if he had not made them important to his film.

The likeable Jason Statham fights it as hard as he can, but his icy character in the end looks like uncut wood.

IN A FEW WORDS… A mysterious money transfer guard surprises his colleagues with his lethal skills, during the attempted robbery of their armored vehicle. The crew wonders who he is and where he came from. Soon, his motivation becomes clear, as he takes dramatic and irreversible steps to settle an old account.

Brother’s Keeper. Drama film, Turkish production of 2021, directed by Ferit Karahan, with Samet Gildiz, Ekin Kos, Machir Ipek, Melich Selcuk and others.

A simple, rough, realistic drama, an indicative example of a sensitive social cinema, with a clear political stance towards the Turkish state, with a fresh look and excellent interpretations, which comes to us from Turkey and Ferit Karahan. A film that won the International Film Critics Association Award at the Panorama section of the Berlinale in 2021, while also winning the screenplay and editing awards at the Antalya Film Festival, the most important film event in Turkey.

Karahan, having his own childhood memories of life in a boarding school, tells the story of a child in a strict boarding school in the mountains of Anatolia who tries to save a friend of his classmate who is seriously ill and while facing the indifference of teachers, bureaucracy, the anachronistic education system, but also widespread stereotypes.

The 38-year-old director films with naturalness and nerve, with the camera in his hand, giving a fascinating realism, but sometimes he falls victim to a cinematic complaint and the one-dimensional description of the negative characters.

With harsh images, describing the oppressive conditions that prevail in the boarding school, in the icy environment, he spontaneously highlights the value of friendship and bonds of solidarity, the unique supplies of the two children in the face of adverse situations they have to face.

Karahan stylizes the stereotypes of the education system, which have taken root in his country for decades, and at the same time makes a comment on the treatment of the Kurds, while he should be praised for the work he has done with the young actors and especially with Samet Gildiz.

IN A FEW WORDS… Yusuf and his best friend Memo are Kurdish students at a secluded primary school in the mountains of Anatolia. When Memo becomes mysteriously ill, Yusuf is forced to fight against the bureaucratic obstacles posed by the oppressive school management in order to help him. As time suffocates, teachers and children blame each other, and evils, feelings of guilt, secrets and lies come to the surface.

Uncharted. Adventure, American production of 2022, directed by Ruben Fleischer, with Tom Holland, Mark Wahlberg, Sophia Ali, Tati Gabriel, Antonio Banderas and others.

Another film based on a video game, one of the most commercial in the young audience, where its producers also aim. A spectacular adventure, trying to enter the universe of heroes like Indiana Jones, with a sense of humor and without even the elementary cinematic standards, wanting to take advantage, in addition to the video game, of the popularity of Tom Holland (because of Spiderman), his cousin Wahlberg and the angry style of Antonio Banderas, in the role of evil.

Of course, fans of the video game and the carefree adventure will get what the film promises, namely a fun adventure, in search of a mythical Magellanic treasure by the two heroes, the impressive and unreal scenes and the humorous, sometimes they work effectively and break the monotony.

However, Ruben Fleischer, another spokesman for the “golden mediocrity” of Hollywood (“Venom”, “Zombieland”), seems to be running out of time and putting on autopilot the direction and recipes of “success” that you now think have been made. law.

Another film that demonstrates the huge problem of Hollywood in finding, if nothing else, decent scripts, going one step further from the sour recipes and offering, even without special requirements, two hours of entertainment.

IN A FEW WORDS… Amateur thief Nathan is recruited by experienced treasure hunter Victor “Sully” to find Magellan’s lost treasure 500 years ago. What begins as a simple robbery for the duo, becomes a well-traveled adventure to arrive first before the ruthless Moncanda who considers himself his rightful heir. If Nate and Sully manage to solve the puzzles and solve one of the oldest mysteries in the world, they can not only claim booty worth $ 5 billion but may also find Nate’s lost brother. All they need to do is stand up to each other.

The movie is still showing:

My Sister Secrets (Souad). Adult story set in the background of modern Egypt, shot by Aiten Amin in 2020 and starring Bashad Ahmed. A drama, for the new generation of the Arab country, fascinated by the still unexplored world of the internet and the western way of life, The film was screened at the Cannes Film Festival and was selected by Egypt as the official nomination for the Oscar for Best International Film. The story takes us to a small town in the Nile Delta, where a 19-year-old girl lives a double life, the real one defined by the conservative Egyptian society and the secret one, that of the internet.
