First, they made their “revolution” – the fashion designers – about skirts. Now, it’s the bras’ turn. We experienced it during the corona virus period, but now things seem to have changed.

And if you thought the current trend of wearing just your underwear – inspired by Miu Miu’s 2023 collection – was provocative, you might want to look away from the runways of Paris this week.

Presenting her first collection for Chloe, designer Chemena Kamali revealed more than just a new direction for the house. “Liberation of the nipple” … went to Paris, with transparent dresses of black lace, white guipure and gray chiffon. There was a 1970s feel to it, a decade where bras were considered unnecessary.

However, Chloe’s Fall/Winter 2024 show was relatively “innocent” compared to Saint Laurent’s catwalk. Yes, Saint Laurent’s designs were beautiful, but they were also… transparent, almost ‘invisible’.

No surprises: this trend has gained momentum, especially during awards season, with many celebrities opting for spider web dresses.

Despite the fashion industry’s “promise” to become more inclusive, there was little sign of real change at this Paris Fashion Week.

Paris has always been the city most attached to the ideal of the ultra-thin model. Paris ranks last, with only 28 plus-size models appearing on the catwalk last season, in a total of around 4,000 looks!

Judging by the collections presented so far, this season the number will be even less.

On the red carpet, the body positivity movement has seen a number of celebrities including Florence Pugh, Dua Lipa, Zendaya and Kendall Jenner embrace the bra-less trend, whether in see-through tops or backless dresses.

“We’re so terrified of the human body that we can’t even look at my two cute little girls behind cloth in a non-sexual way,” she said. Florence Pugh.

However, the “throw away the bra” movement is not always a bold statement of freedom. For some, taking off their bra is just another way to get noticed. And in the age of social media, getting attention is what it’s all about.

When it comes to ploys for…attention seeking, it’s nothing new. In 1966, Yves Saint Laurent shocked society by taking off a see-through top on the catwalk, saying that “nothing is more beautiful than a naked body.”
