Because running in complete silence can make you a better runner

by

Have you ever started running just to realize that your headphones or cell phone are running out of battery and to give up the idea altogether? We have all suffered from it.

We are used to running listening to loud music or a podcast. And of course, this results in us not thinking about how to run without some sound background keeping us company.

But if you are looking for ways and tips to become a better runner you should probably leave the headphones at home.
According to a survey by Runner’s World, 61% of people hear something while running. Thus the “silent runners” belong to the minority. But why run in complete silence can make you a better runner in the future?

Improves your mental strength

Running is both a mental and a physical battle, which is why it requires so much practice. Elle, a runner from Liverpool, says she started competing in recent years and stopped listening to music to improve her running mentality. “I have learned that mental capacity can sometimes be stronger than the strength in your legs and, for me, I have to run without music to have that strength and concentration,” he says.

It also helps when it comes to racing: “Do not misunderstand me – when you are racing and you hear a heavy breath behind you, it can be frustrating. “But it also helps you realize that someone is close to you and can push you faster.”

Lucy, a runner from Suffolk, agrees, explaining that she runs without music after a break from running, such as at Christmas time or when training for a tough race. “It makes me more aware of my breathing, so that I can concentrate on having it under control. I find the loud music in my ears stressful “.

Your sociability increases

Running with a friend, relative or in an informal race like Parkrun is a great way to motivate yourself and this is hard to do with headphones. Ally stopped listening to music while running and as she stated: “I was more aware of the people around me.”

Elle also began to enjoy running more when she ran races with other people without music. “I started running for the half marathon but I chose not to listen to music during these runs, as these were more social races, running with the family.”

Running with other people is a great way to change your routine and possibly increase your speed. If you are interested in running and competing, you are often not allowed to listen to music, so it is good to get used to it early.

It can improve the rhythm and control of your breathing

Breath control is a critical part of running, but it can be difficult to manage if you can not hear your breathing over the music. Lucy says this is one of the main benefits of silent running for her: “I can concentrate on my rhythm and breathing without distracting a podcast or music to my ears. “If I feel in control when I run, I’m more likely to enjoy running.”

Elle agrees that running in silence can not only help you focus on your breathing but also on the mind-body connection. “By not listening to music, I feel even more focused, being fully aware of my body and my legs,” he says.

It can increase your consciousness

Running may not be what you imagine when you hear the word consciousness, but running in silence can be a form of meditation.

“Running is the only time I can not think, I just let my mind calm down for a while. “With music or a podcast, it was just another distraction.” While running with music can be relaxing in itself, it may make you feel indifferent rather than aware, something that may not be as satisfying for everyone in the long run.

“When I run without music, I can process what I need to achieve that day or I have already achieved that day. “I look at scenarios that happened that day and break them down into tiny pieces and everything looks clearer,” Elle agrees. “I often feel like my mind is going to run and my feet are there to carry me.”
