The elaboration of the framework study of the middle cavity was based on the evaluation of the restoration works of the lower cavity, on the experience gained during the twenty years of engagement with the monument, on the systematic observation, documentation and recording of the evolution of the pathology of the Theater. This process delimits the desired scope of the project, the time hierarchy of work, as well as a program of additional research and studies that may be required. Critical factors that influenced the formation of a proposal in terms of how to extend the work in the middle cavity, were the factors “time” and “wear”.
The object of the preliminary study is the restoration of the whole of the First Flange according to the principles and the approved methodology that has already been applied for the restoration of the lower cavity, and the updating of the approved final study concerning the area of ​​stands 1 and 2. Also, The detailed on-site measurements and the creation of a database for each architectural member are utilized by studying their original position and the removal of the quotations.
Following the positive opinion of the Central Archaeological Council, the Minister of Culture and Sports Lina Mendoni, stated: “The Sanctuary of Ancient Dodoni is one of the major archeological sites of great importance and interest. The ongoing project, included in the Operational Program “Epirus 2014-2020” and with a budget of 5 million euros, is an integral part of the interventions in the monument that have been carried out since the beginning of 2000. The above studies are part of the restoration program of the Theater and formulate specific applicable proposals for its fixing and restoration. To date, the restoration of stands of the southeastern ascent of the hollow has proceeded and works of restoration of the southwestern ascent are in progress. With the approval of the Central Archaeological Council of the updated framework study, it is possible to move to a new distinct part of the monument, the middle hollow, the management of which is a key factor for the continuation of work on the whole monument. A constant priority for the Ministry of Culture and Sports is the continuation of the restoration works of the Theater, the protection and promotion of all the monuments of the Sanctuary, the upgrade of the public service infrastructure as well as the improvement of the security of the space “.
The interventions in the middle zone of the Theater are hierarchical in time and theme. They start with the maintenance and restoration of the AD molding. This is followed by the gradual preparation-approval-implementation of seats and steps maintenance studies and their repositioning, starting from the central stand 5B, which shows the largest number of broken seats from all the stands in the middle zone. The last stage includes the preliminary design of side slopes and external stairwells and the study of static adequacy of hollow slopes and stairway slopes for the NW molding.
