Todorova said the analysis and dating of the amulet was done by one of the best epigraphic experts in Europe
A silver amulet is one of the last valuable archaeological finds discovered in Bulgaria during excavations at the Deltum Debelt archaeological site in the southeastern part of the municipality of Sredets. It is believed that the amulet is the oldest evidence of Christianity in the Bulgarian lands. After the restoration and analysis of its inscription, it will be placed in the museum, museum curator Dora Todorova told the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA).
“The early Christians were careful not to recognize them and used various symbols referring to Christ. In this case, the amulet was placed inside a grave, near the head of the person who was buried…”, Todorova explained.
Todorova reported that the analysis and dating of the amulet was done by one of the best epigraphic experts in Europe, Dr. Nikolai Sarankov. In his analysis, Sarankov argues that the dating of the amulet makes it the oldest Christian object with the earliest reference to Christ ever found on Bulgarian territory.
