Have you heard that song that went viral on TikTok a while ago where a warm female voice with a strong British accent sings: “A little context if you care to listen, I find myself in a shit position. The man that I love sat me down last night and he told me that it’s over, dumb decision. And I don’t wanna feel how my heart is rippin’. In fact, I don’t wanna feel, so I stick to sippin’, and I’m out on the town with a simple mission, in my little black dress, and this shit is sittin’?

The song is called “Escapism”, was released in October 2022, and you’ve definitely heard of it at least in passing. So, an opportunity to introduce you to the artist behind the song.

Why is Raye so popular?

Young, talented, with a strong voice. These alone should ensure Raye’s success, but the list is even longer. Among the topics she touches on in her songs, some are very close to today’s youth, giving us an idea why she is so loved on TikTok. Raye often sings about her history and relationship with addictions. She sings about body dysmorphia and the altered perception of her body and appearance, about self-esteem and anxiety, about relationships with men but also about the violence she suffered.

Speaking about her first album, she told Rolling Stone: “Some of these songs helped me process them. I just needed to hear my subjects, in a more polished form. Like “body dysmorphia,” it sounds so bad in my head, but when you put it in a song, it’s a little more digestible, for me. Many of these stories are very raw and healing at the same time.”

Her influences range from R&B, neo-soul to indie rock, Frank Ocean, Tame Impala and Bombay Bicycle Club. Raye is a contemporary artist who focuses on the positive from past and present, but with depth. And as if that wasn’t enough, she is extremely social with most people her age and younger. And that explains it all.
