The European Commission today presented its work program for 2026, which includes a series of actions to create a more sovereign and more independent Europe. The work programme, entitled ‘Europe’s moment of independence’, addresses current and future challenges arising from threats to our security and democracy, conflicts and geopolitical tensions, risks to our economy and industry, and accelerating climate change. It builds on the commitments set out in President von der Leyen’s political guidelines and mandate letters to the European Union (EU) College of Commissioners, as well as the ideas set out in her 2025 State of the Union address.
In 2026, the Commission will continue to cut red tape for citizens, businesses and public administrations. The first general report on simplification, implementation and enforcement, also adopted today, charts the progress made so far — such as the six omnibus packages and other simplification proposals that aim to save more than €8.6 billion for businesses and citizens.
Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said: “The 2026 work program marks another important step towards a stronger and more sovereign Europe. We will continue to work closely with the European Parliament and the Council to deliver on Europe’s priorities, boost competitiveness, harness the power of our single market, simplify our rules and tackle the affordability crisis. Together, we will protect our citizens and defend our values.”
