One of the Hermès Birkin bags that belonged to Jane Birkin will go under the hammer on December 5 in Abu Dhabi, just months after the original Birkin sold for a record $8.6 million, Sotheby’s announced today.

Named Le Birkin Voyageur, the black leather bag, used and decorated with handwritten inscriptions by the English singer and actress, who died in 2023, is estimated to sell for between $230,000 and $430,000 (between €197,000 and €370,000).

Hermès’ offer to Jane Birkin in 2003 was among four bags the artist received after selling her iconic original in 1994 to raise money for an organization fighting AIDS, the auction house explained.

The bag was first sold at auction in 2007 to benefit a human rights organization, before joining a private collection.

“Selling these beloved Birkin bags to raise money for charity after a few years of use became a tradition for Jane Birkin, with Hermès replacing them each time,” explains Sotheby’s.

In July, the first Birkin bag, designed especially for Jane Birkin in 1984, sold in Paris for nearly €8.6 million, making it the most expensive bag ever sold at auction.

“To present not one, but two Hermès bags that were personally owned by Jane Birkin in a single year is historic to say the least,” said Morgan Halimi, head of bags and fashion at Sotheby’s.
