If we talk about beauty trends, then the pearl skin he has already won the battle. It creates a soft, fresh aura on the face with delicate rosy shades. And after so many years of clear skin promoting the natural look and texture of skin, pearl skin is about to make us shine.

If you’re tired of the natural look and the glazed look with intense shine, then it’s time to switch to something fresher. Pearl skin is exactly what you need to make your skin look healthy, fresh and shiny, without excesses and unnecessary products.

What is pearl skin?

Terry Barber, director of makeup artist at MAC Cosmetics, explains that for his team, the pearl skin journey actually began years ago on an Alexander McQueen catwalk. “The desire for this type of skin was part of the reason we invented Strobe Cream,” says Barber. “The look is inspired by McQueen’s shows in the late ’90s, where everyone had very toned skin that had a very romantic feel.”

Pearl skin can be considered similar to last year’s big trend: glazed skin. The trend took off when Hailey Bieber mentioned that she goes to bed with skin as glossy as donut icing, not knowing that the beauty world would make it a trend.

“The last ten years or so have been very glamorous,” says MAC Cosmetics trend director Catt Quinn. “And pearl skin is actually refractive, so it takes that light and reflects it onto your skin. The result is that instead of having bright highlights, your skin has a glow that surrounds your features.”.

This diffuse glow is what makes Barber think of old Regency oil paintings. “I’m really referring to 18th century portraits”says Barber. “You’re looking for an aristocratic feel that those McQueen shows had”.

Pat McGrath’s latest creative direction on the NYFW runway is a great example of a similar aesthetic. Her direction, inspired by the porcelain doll, used a subtle combination of smooth, flawless skin with a soft glow that gave the skin a glass or fine porcelain texture.

How to get pearl skin

According to makeup artist Natalie Drescher, the trick to achieving pearl skin is to banish your preconceived notions about highlighter.

“Pearl skin is all fashion ala Pat McGrath on the catwalk and I love it”says Drescher. “I love using highlighter all over the skin, not just on the high points, where we would traditionally use highlighter. It helps achieve that diffused glass skin that’s still wearable. What you should ideally do is aim to soft focus on your skin, blur your imperfections and create a kind of cloak over your entire face. That way you won’t draw attention to features you want to downgrade.”.

So all you have to do is dare. Pearl skin is here to stay!
