The Medes, ten of the twelve Satyrs and Love, the Fairy Tale of the Beautiful, the sculpture of Oedipus and Antigone, are extremely tombstones and for the first time all the stores with his designs that survive, are some of the 150 works presented in the report “Gianoulis Halepas: Give and Take”who runs his entire fictional life Tinian sculptor and which was inaugurated, on Friday, at Teloglion Foundation of Arts AUTh by the President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou.
THE exhibition is a co-production of Tellogleio with Onassis Culture and its starting point is the recent acquisition of a large set of sculptures and drawings by Halepas from the Onassis Foundation. It is a part of the collection of Irini and Vassilios Halepas, the artist’s nieces, who in August 1930 transported him from Tinos to Athens, where he created more than 40 works and many drawings in the last eight years of his life.
It was the most important collection for the work and life of Halepa, as it saved important works of the first, second and especially the third period of his artistic production.
THE first period (1870-1878) in work of Χαλεπά covers his youth until the onset of his illness. The second period (1902-1930), the years he lived and worked in Tinos, after his return from the Corfu Psychiatric Hospital and the third period is identical with the time he lived and created in Athens, ie the years 1930-1938.
In exhibition more than 150 works are presented (sculptures, drawings, shops), 80 of which belong to the Onassis Foundation Collection, while the rest are from the Art Collection of Tellogleio, the National Gallery Alexandros Soutsos Museum, the Tinian Culture Foundation (ITIP) Of Tinos and the Gianoulis Halepa Museum of Tinos Tower, as well as from Private Collections.
Drawings in account stores
For the first time, shocking plans of Gianoulis Halepas are presented to the public in stores of his father’s business. The study of the ten mansions that have been rescued, allows the penetration of the artist’s artistic thought and from their pages comes the title of the Dounai-Lavein exhibition, which matches the production process in the sculpture of Gianoulis.
The Give and take in the pages of the stores, he expresses the handover of forms, themes, orders and their consequences in the work of Halepa, but also in his father’s workshop through exchanges with sculptors, contemporary or old, that influence the choices, his work, his artistic creation.
Throughout Gianoulis’s work, the “two-way” give-and-take, according to “Dounai kai Lavine” in the accounts of his father’s company, seems fatal to determine the process of his creative course, proving the power of reciprocity in the artistic sector “, said in a press conference the general director of Tellogleio, Alexandra Goulaki-Voutyra.
The perfect imperfection of Halepa and his message
“Even the sketches, which can be a detail of folding, are a complete project. This imperfection is finally perfect “, noted Aphrodite Panagiotakou, director of Culture of the Onassis Foundation, with Ms. Voutyra adding that” the perfect sculpture for Halepas is what you should see around, it does not have a main side ” , emphasizing the sculptor’s obsession with perfect composition.
Referring to the ethos of Halepa, Ms. Voutyra noted that this “takes him to a place of holiness. The way he managed to advance his art in such difficulties, is an example that makes us more optimistic. If he succeeds, we can. “
Halepas concerns us “because his life and work is a narrative about the possibilities and limits of modern Greek society”, says in the text of the catalog the President of the Onassis Foundation, Antonis S. Papadimitriou.
Halepas abroad
Both Ms. Panagiotakou, representing the Onassis Foundation, and Ms. Voutyra, representing Tellogleio, agreed that Halepa’s work should go abroad. “We want the works to travel”, stressed Ms. Panagiotakou, adding that the creation of a digital environment for the entire collection is imminent.
The Onassis Foundation in Thessaloniki
The Director of Culture of the Onassis Foundation expressed the intention of the Foundation to travel the exhibition to Athens, but also the performance dedicated to Halepas under the direction of Argyros Chiotis and the writing of “The Boy” which is currently hosted at the House of Letters to come in Thessaloniki.
Referring to the cooperation of the two Institutions and “playing” with the title of the exhibition, Aphrodite Panagiotakou, stressed that “there was a give and take very generous in terms of flow and communication”, adding that this is the beginning of the Foundation’s relationship with Tellogleio , but also with Thessaloniki. “We wanted to find people who speak a common language and dream together,” said Ms. Panagiotakou.
The exhibition is framed by a bilingual edition produced by the Publications Department of the Onassis Foundation and designed by the Grid Office and is available in Tellogleio, on the Roof of the Onassis Foundation and in bookstores.
The scientific curation of the exhibition and the publication is signed by Alexandra Goulaki-Voutyra and the design of the exhibition by the set designer, Pavlos Thanopoulos.
