Zélia Duncan and Rita Lee give voice to the famous song “Pagu”, recorded in 2000, but the partnership did not last throughout the time the two lived together on the music scene. The singer spoke about her breakup with the queen of rock, who died in 2023, after joining the band Mutantes, in 2006.
In an interview with Tati Bernardi on the podcast Desculpa Algoa Coisa, Zélia Duncan recalled the invitation to join Mutantes, made by Sergio Dias, the band’s guitarist, and Arnaldo Baptista. The singer said that before accepting the invitation, she consulted her friend Rita Lee, who had been expelled from the band in the 70s.
“I never wanted to sing in Mutantes. I’m not crazy. Look at my voice, look at Rita’s voice, one low, one high. He (Sérgio) invited me to sing with the band in Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco. I was desperate. They invited Rita, she didn’t want to. And they were looking for a singer”, said Zélia.
The singer said that Rita agreed to her joining the group: “I picked up the phone, she answered, and I said: ‘Rita, I received this invitation, but I want to know what it’s like for you. Because if it’s strange for you, I really won’t I’m going.’ She waited about three seconds and said these words: ‘Go, you’re going to have fun with the brothers.” However, the atmosphere of friendship did not last: “She said ‘go’, and I went. A few months later, she disappeared, disappeared, and disappeared from me. She stopped. I tried, to a certain point, obviously I respected it.”
Zélia lamented the breakup of the friendship and recalled the recording of “Pagu”, a song that she is very proud of. “I sang with Rita several times at her shows, and for me, it was an immense honor. And we talked to each other, we shared a lot of cool things. I met Rita when I recorded ‘Lá vai eu’. When she had the Prize of Brazilian Music, she was honored, and she asked me to sing”. “And Rita was my first idol. When I was 12 years old, I asked my mother for the first vinyl, which was ‘Forbidden Fruit'”, she said.
Zélia spoke about how she felt at the time: “It hurt. It hurt. It hurts, it hurts to this day. Life imposes itself, and I will pay tribute to Rita until I die.” “I’m very calm about what I could do. I think I was her friend until she allowed it,” she said.
