Animasyros 2022: Open call for submission of animation films until 30/6

The International Animation Festival Animasyros turns 15 this year and invites creators from all over the world to submit their films until June 30, 2022. Faithful to its appointment with Syros, the largest festival of its kind in Greece and one of the 20 largest in Europe will take place from 20 to 25 September 2022 focusing on the capital of the Cyclades.

This year, the Festival expands its events by one more day, while acquiring a new space, in Ermoupolis, the former HERMES winter cinema, where for a year the creative team of Animasyros will have the opportunity to breathe new life into this historical cultural space.

The program is expected to be richer than ever with 7 competitive sections, special tributes, training workshops, regional actions, new domestic and international collaborations and the Market which is now a reference center for the industry in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The main theme of Animasyros 2022 is dedicated to the animation production of the Baltic States (Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia) entitled, “The Baltic Animation Way”, which aims to promote this very special and modern animation scene that flourishes in these countries.

Program

The artistic program of Animasyros 2022 includes the competition categories International, Student, Feature Film / Audience Award, Greek-language film, TV and Custom Films, while for the second year, this year, the K.ID.S categories are competing for the films that are addressed to children and Animapride for the best animation film LOATKI + theme.

For the 8th consecutive year, the Agora is organized, one of the most “lively” parts of the Festival that brings together the international professionals in the field with the Greek animation community, while at the same time Syros becomes a reference point for the professionals of the Eastern Mediterranean. Through strategic partnerships, such as the one with the world-famous French production company Folimage (2021) and the MIFA – Animation du Monde (2020) program, an integral part of the Market of the International Animation Festival of Annecy, the conditions are created for empowerment and promotion. of the industry internationally.

The Market program includes the Pitching Forum, roundtable discussions, masterclasses and networking meetings with industry professionals. Internationally renowned animators and producers such as Joanna Quinn and Les Mills will present a unique masterclass based on their film “The Affairs of the Art”, nominated for this year’s Oscars in the category of short animation, and the famous French producer Olivier Catherin, who will introduce us to the process of producing an animation film.

For the second year, the MEDanina tribute continues with creators from the Mediterranean countries. The opening of the applications for the Pitching Forum of the Market will be announced soon.

Finally, the program does not lack the established educational programs, aimed at children, adolescents, young professionals, people with disabilities and the elderly, which are carried out in collaboration with KAPI Ermoupolis, KDAP – MeA Syros, DELASAL Syros Schools and the Association of Syrians of Asia Minor. The themes of the workshops are linked to the anniversary of the Asia Minor Catastrophe by highlighting basic human values ​​such as acceptance and solidarity in contrast to the loss and uprooting experienced by the Greeks of Asia Minor. The films that will be created will be screened at the closing and award ceremony of the Festival.

Visual Identity

The visual identity of Animasyros 2022 was designed by the pioneer in animation, illustrator and visual artist Giannis Koutsouris.

The award-winning artist illustrated books, newspapers and magazines, created hundreds of characters, logos, advertisements and cartoons. He was a student of the great painter Spyros Vassilios and for 30 years he has created some of the most popular movies and animated commercials, with the companies Kounoupi and Kwak. Since 2000 he has been exclusively engaged in painting and sculpture, having held dozens of solo and group exhibitions. He has been a member of the Chamber of Fine Arts of Greece since 1973.

Call for entries

Applications for the competition sections of this year’s event are submitted exclusively through the page maintained by Animasyros on the Film Freeway platform.

The deadline for applications is June 30, 2022.
