Almost ten years ago, Giovanna Ewbank proposed a TV program in which she would interview artists and personalities sitting in her own bed. The idea was not well accepted, but she insisted. She took the project to YouTube and, alone, made it happen.
Since then, the Gioh channel has grown and that first talk show has split into several, in different formats. There are now more than 60 employees, while the “roots” bed setting is a thing of the past and has given way to more elaborate settings.
Today established as a presenter and businesswoman in the entertainment sector, owner of a channel with 5.3 million subscribers, Giovanna is constantly sought out by broadcasters who, back in the day, snubbed her ideas. “When I presented on TV, I was discredited”, she says, in an interview with F5.
“I was a young woman with many ideas that were never taken off paper”, she remembers. “So I decided to invent my own career. I went to YouTube and it was a blast. I was one of the first to invest in YouTube.”
After refusing some invitations to take her podcasts to TV, she accepted GNT’s idea of creating a spin-off of Quem Pode, Pod. Quem Não Pode Se Sacode debuts on the pay channel on Tuesday (23). Alongside Fernanda Paes Leme, her partner on the channel, Giovanna presents the new format.
“I had some invitations to take Quem Pode, Pod to TV, and not just from the Globo group. I refused them all because I knew it wouldn’t work on TV”, he says. “Until GNT came up wonderfully with this project where we could continue this work, but with a television structure. We thought it would work very well and decided to embark on it.”
One of the upgrades that the broadcaster provided was a studio with a stage, audience and more guests on the program. “On the Pod, we’re two against one and on the show there are at least three guests per episode. There’s more information, more personalities to deal with. And it brings a different temperature, a different rhythm. It’s immediate. We understand what works, what the audience likes it”, he says.
“The program is light, fun, but, at the same time, talking about important, exciting topics, there are jokes and without losing our DNA”, he says. “I think we managed to bring this language from Pod, but in such a way that people arrived at the program ready to open up.”
Adding up all the episodes of the first season, there are more than 60 guests, of whom she is proud. “Getting good guests comes from credibility not only of the channel, but of our history”, she says. “Sixty guests on a program that hasn’t debuted yet. It’s a lot of interesting people, bringing diversity of age and thoughts.”
Even on TV, Giovanna does not intend to leave behind the platform where she built her career and made her ideas take shape. “YouTube is free, I’m the one who will dictate the thermometer of my channel”, she says. “The relationship with the public is closer. The guests feel more comfortable, we feel more comfortable.”
