For the first time, an Italian film produced by Netflix reaches No. 1 in the streaming service’s global film chart in the non-English speaking category.

The young adult romantic drama “Fabbricante di Lacrime” (The Tearsmith) is based on the Italian bestseller of the same name by the author under the pen name Erin Dum.

“The Tearsmith” was released worldwide on Netflix on April 4 and quickly climbed the streaming giant’s global charts.

The film, directed by Alessandro Genovesi, has been Netflix’s No. 1 non-English-language film for two weeks.

The plot takes place in the USA and follows two diametrically different orphans, Nika and Rigel, who are adopted by the same family from Sunnyside Orphanage.

In their new home, the two young people fall in love, of course, amid all kinds of conflict. Starring newcomers, rapper Simone Baldasseroni and Caterina Ferioli.

The movie “Tearsmith,” according to Variety, was shot on a modest budget of 6.5 million euros ($6.9 million). It is produced by Iginio Straffi and Alessandro Usai through Rome-based Colorado Film, which is owned by Straffi’s Rainbow Group.
