George Lanthimos released his first book, titled “Dear God, Parthenon is still broken”created during the filming of the director’s award-winning latest film, ‘Poor Things’ in Budapest.

According to the publishing house Void, “the book inhabits a separate world, disconnected from time and place.”

The photographs drift between black and white and color, giving the impression of a daydream between past and present, while multiple layers between reality and fiction are gradually revealed.

The film was set in various late 19th century locations, including London, Lisbon, Marseille and a cruise ship – but all recreated in Budapest. These built cities and interiors are also the backdrop for the photographs.

Giorgos Lanthimos has deliberately widened the frame to show the function of the construction, constructing a new story within history. To reflect this, the edition has been designed with folding sheets to reveal these constructs within the cast of characters – “that is, the reader opens a book within a book”.

According to the publishing house, Emma Stone, who won an Oscar for her performance as Bella Baxter, was actively involved in the creative process of creating the images. After shooting, they would display the 6×7 color negatives and 4×5 black-and-white film sheets together in a makeshift darkroom in a bathroom. “This alchemical act offered both of them a creative outlet beyond the scope and limitations of film,” we read in the book’s introduction.
