Oprah Winfrey apologized for her role in promoting toxic diet culture, months after she finally admitted to using weight loss drugs.

The 70-year-old presenter opened up about her regrets surrounding the diet and body image debate in a three-hour ‘WeightWatchers’ special.

He said: “I was firmly involved in this diet culture. Through my platforms, through the magazine, through the talk show for 25 years and on the internet. I’ve contributed a lot to it and I’ve done a lot of shows about weight loss.”

Last March, the celebrity presenter revealed she starved herself for almost five months on a liquid diet in 1988, before quickly regaining the weight after declaring her victory on TV.

She recounted her weight loss efforts on “An Oprah Special: Shame, Blame and the Weight Loss Revolution.” However, just one day after showing her results on TV, she started gaining weight again.

“In an effort to combat all the shame, I starved myself for almost five months and then pulled that fat wagon that the internet will never forget. As he explained, “for 25 years, making fun of my weight was a national sport”. Although over the years, she had lost and gained some weight, but with the help of medication she stopped being obsessed with food.

The show came days after Oprah stepped down from her position on the board of Weight Watchers, citing a potential conflict of interest with the show, which heavily featured weight-loss drug brands. Her departure caused Weight Watchers shares to drop 20%.
