Eurovision is estimated to be watched by at least 150 million people every year. Some analysts estimate that this year’s competition will be the most politically charged in its 68-year history. For months, artists and activists have been calling on Eurovision to ban Israel’s participation because of the military operations in Gaza.
Thousands of demonstrators have “besieged” Malmö since the first semi-final, with slogans overshadowing the “fancy” event, many call it a “festival”. “Eurovision shame on you! The blood is also on your hands!” and “Freedom in Palestine!”, are some of the slogans chanted by the protesters.
The participation of the Netherlands was excluded from the Eurovision 2024 final, as announced by the EBU. Greece, Ireland, Cyprus and Switzerland they were absent from the scene of the parade of flags, as many international media write. Another Eutrapelo emerged with the participation of France, as Slimane interrupted his own performance to shout: “United by music, yes, but for love, for peace”to the enthusiastic cheers of the audience.
The exclusion of the Netherlands and the “shocking” decision
As the EBU announced at noon on Saturday, Dutch singer Joost Klein has been disqualified from Eurovision following a complaint by a female member of the EBU production team. Initially, the organizing Authority had suspended the participation of the Netherlands from the dress rehearsal for the Eurovision final, but finally, as announced by the EBU, it was decided to exclude Joost Klein from the competition. So in tonight’s final of the 68th European competition, 25 countries will appear and not 26.
The first reaction to the exclusion of Joost Klein came – according to Agence France-Presse – from the television station Avrotros, which hosts the competition in the Netherlands, as it considers the exclusion of the Dutch artist “disproportionate”. The channel said it found the ban “disproportionate”, saying the “decision is shocking”.
