THE International Museum Day celebrated every year on May 18. That day the entrance they are in museums all over the country freewhile a series of actions, such as exhibitions, educational programs and other events, are organized by museums and other cultural institutions throughout the month of May.
The International Council of Museums (ICOM), in its effort to highlight the role of museums in modern society, established May 18 as International Museum Day since 1977. The message of this anniversary is to make museums cultural exchange agents “for the purpose of strengthening education, promoting mutual understanding, peace and cooperation among peoples”.
The theme of this year’s celebration is “Museums for Education and Research”, a choice by ICOM which wishes – according to its announcement – to highlight museums as vital places of convergence of education and research, where innovation meets tradition, covering a very wide field, from art and history to science and technology. Consequently, they can make a substantial contribution to understanding the world.
The Board of Directors of the Greek Section of ICOM, highly appreciating the scientific and educational work carried out by it Museum of Newer Greek Culturedecided to be an honored museum for 2024.
The main event of the celebration will take place on Saturday, May 18, 2024, at 19:00. in the event hall of the Museum of Modern Greek Culture, 10 Areos Street in Athens. On the same day, a series of guided tours and other events will take place at the Museum with free entry for the public (registration required).

As the announcement of the Greek Department adds, museums as dynamic cultural and educational institutions have the potential to cultivate and develop curiosity, creativity and critical thinking, providing the public with a comprehensive experience of knowledge and entertainment. Spaces open to all citizens, promote research and the dissemination of new ideas. This year’s celebration of International Museum Day promotes awareness of a sustainable, empathetic and inclusive world. It will focus on the following topics, which are included in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals:
• Goal 4: Quality education with equal access and lifelong learning opportunities for all.
• Goal 9: Sustainable development with resilient infrastructure and encouraging innovation.
