Paulinha Abelha, lead singer of Calcinha Preta, died on the night of this Wednesday (23). The information was given by the Primavera Hospital, where she was hospitalized, and released by the forró band’s office on social media.
“Hospital Primavera communicates, with regret, that the singer, Paula de Menezes Nascimento Leca Viana, Paulinha Abelha, passed away today at 19:26 as a result of a multisystem commitment”, says the death note.
“In the last 24 hours, he presented an important aggravation of neurological lesions, verified in MRI, and associated with deep coma”, continues the text. “The brain death diagnostic protocol was then initiated, which confirmed the hypothesis after specific clinical and complementary exams.”
Paulinha became the lead singer of Calcinha Preta in 1998. Since then, she has left the group twice to try solo flights, but has always returned. Since 2018, she has been permanently in charge of Calcinha Preta.
She was hospitalized on February 11 at Unimed Sergipe hospital, in Aracaju, with kidney problems. The artist was returning from a trip when she complained of abdominal pain and sought care, having been diagnosed with kidney damage. There is no information on what would have caused the problem.
On the 17th, she showed a worsening in her condition and went into a coma. On the same day, she was transferred to the Primavera hospital, also in the Sergipe capital.
The technical director of the Ricardo Leite hospital explained that the artist was undergoing renal replacement therapy and hemodialysis. “During hospitalization, inflammation of the liver was diagnosed, which I open parenthesis is not viral hepatitis”, he emphasized.
On Tuesday (22), neurologist Marco Aurélio Alves, who was part of the team that took care of the singer, said that her situation was delicate due to a deep coma. He cited that Paulinha was at level 3 on the Glasgow scale – which rates the patient’s consciousness levels from 3 to 15.
The day before, Calcinha Preta had already announced the suspension of all their shows until March 10th. “Due to the hospitalization and awaiting improvements in the health framework of our Paulinha Abelha, the office responsible for the career of Calcinha Preta decided to suspend all appointments scheduled for the band until March 10, 2022,” the statement read.
The latest medical bulletin on Paulinha’s condition reported that she was still undergoing tests to assess and monitor neurological, hepatic and renal dysfunctions. In a coma, she was breathing with the help of machines.
