“He was a restless spirit, who didn’t stop studying and working almost until the end,” the Minister of Culture states, among other things, in her condolence message
He sent a condolence message the Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni for his loss Sir John Boardman which praised the late archaeologist’s work, characterizing as a milestone the excavations at the Emporio of Chios and his passing by the British Archaeological School of Athens.
The statement of the Minister of Culture:
“Sir John Boardman was an eminent archaeologist and art historian, with a distinct, lasting and most important contribution to Greek classical studies.
In his long career, spanning more than seven decades, he fruitfully combined excavation research with university teaching at the University of Oxford, where he trained entire generations of archaeologists. His authorship consists of dozens of monographs and hundreds of articles and contributions to collective volumes, many of which concern the study of Greek archeology and history.
Undoubtedly, great milestones in his involvement with classical Greece were the excavations he carried out in the Emporio of Chios and his time at the British Archaeological School in Athens. I treasure only his systematic contribution to Greek vases and the study of archaic and classical ceramics. Above all, Sir John Boardman was a restless spirit, who did not cease to study and work almost to the end, and insisted, by reason and deed, on the promotion of the classical heritage and the diffusion of archaeological knowledge, in an intelligible manner, but deep, to ever wider audiences. I had the real fortune to meet him many times in Chios and to watch his deep and lucid archaeological speech.
To his family, friends and students I extend my sincere condolences.”
