H Italy officially welcomed 600 antiquities from the USA, worth $65 million, that were looted years ago and dispersed to Museums, Galleries and collectors. These are antiquities of unique art and technique that impressed the Italian public opinion.
The priceless collection it includes ancient gold coins, mosaics, manuscripts and bronze statues, all of which were found during extensive research.
The items were handed over to Italian police by an American delegation consisting of the US ambassador to Italy, Jack Markell, the head of the antiquities unit of the New York State Attorney’s Office, Matthew Bogdanos and members of the investigations division of the US Department of Homeland Security.
Among the antiquities that were repatriated are several Etruscan vases, a life-size bronze figure dating from the 9th century BC. until the 2nd century AD Other returned works include oil paintings from the 16th and 19th centuries looted from Italian Museums, religious institutions and private homes.
One of the most valuable finds is a silver coin of Naxos from the 4th century BC. with the god of wine in Ancient Greece, Dionysus, which was removed from an illegal excavation site in Sicily in 2013 and trafficked to the UK. The coin was discovered as part of an investigation into a British coin dealer, who had offered it for sale for $500,000, reports The Guardian newspaper.
Bronze warrior statue from Umbria which had been stolen from an Italian Museum in 1962 was found in a well-known American Museum and a mosaic floor depicting the myth of Orpheus enchanting the wild animals with the sound of the lyre from the mid-3rd to mid-4th century AD. stolen from a clandestine excavation in Sicily in the early 1990s was seized from the private collection of a New York collector.
The works, which were plundered from the Italian territoriess Lazio, Campania, Apulia, Calabria and Sicily, were seized in New York and New Jersey last year.
