The family of actor Bill Paxton, known for works such as “Titanic” (1997) and “Apollo 13” (1995) and who died in 2017 at age 61, is expected to receive more than R$ 5 million in compensation. The widow accuses the medical team of negligence after he suffered complications after a heart procedure.
According to People, the amount was established by a Los Angeles Superior Court judge during the trial of the lawsuit filed by Paxton’s family against the medical staff.
Paxton was undergoing heart surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles when the condition worsened. The family indicates that the anesthesia used would have been the complicating factor and that surgery might not have been necessary.
Doctors defend themselves and say they are innocent. Even so, they entered into an agreement with the family to pay the compensation amount.
According to Variey and The Hollywood Reporter, the family, at the time of his death, released a statement asking for privacy and recalling that “Bill began his career in Hollywood films working in the arts department, and has gone on to have an illustrious career spanning four decades. as a beloved and prolific actor and filmmaker”.
Bill debuted as an actor in the 1970s after being part of the small production art department. In 1986, he worked with James Cameron for the first time on “Aliens Rescue”, a sequel to “Alien: The Eighth Passenger” (1979).
He was also in “Apollo 13” (1995), with Tom Hanks, and in 1997 he returned to work with Cameron in “Titanic”, playing the explorer who searches for a valuable gem in the wreckage of the ship. The role is the most remembered of his career, which includes the series “Big Love – Amor Imenso”, between 2006 and 2011, and supporting characters in “The Vulture” and “On the Edge of Tomorrow”, both from 2014.
As a director, he directed “The Devil’s Hand” (2001) and “The Best Game in History” (2005), produced by Disney and starring Shia LaBeouf.
The actor was in full swing: in February of the year he died, the series “Training Day” premiered on the North American channel CBS. The last movie he starred in, “The Circle”, was released in the US in April.
