An elaborately decorated blue roombrought to light excavations in the central Pompeii in Italy.

Archaeologists believe it is an ancient Roman sanctuary while Italian Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano, who visited the site on Tuesday, called it “a treasure chest that is still partially unexplored”.

The blue color found in this new discovery is rare, with the Ministry of Culture pointing out that it is generally associated with environments of great decorative importance.

An in-depth analysis of the room, according to Italy’s culture ministry, found that the space could be interpreted as a sanctuary or a space dedicated to ritual activities and the preservation of sacred objects.

On the walls of the room are female figures said to represent the four seasons, as well as allegories of agriculture and shepherding.

The drawings, believed to have been made by children between the ages of 5 and 7, shortly before the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79, were found on the walls of a back room in the residential sector of the archaeological park.
