Daniela Mercury tried to avoid issues related to politics on the night of the Brazilian Music Awards, but it didn’t work.
After being asked whether she was for or against the privatization of beaches (“totally against”), she complained about the bill that equates abortion after the 22nd week, even in cases of rape, with murder. PL 1904/2024 was authored by deputy Sóstenes Cavalcante (PL-RJ).
“As the president is going to veto it and it probably won’t pass in the Senate, we still have the Federal Supreme Court. I think they don’t want to waste energy on an issue of this magnitude and it won’t pass anyway. It won’t be approved, it won’t becoming law. But this shows the Chamber’s mind, what it is worried about instead of us advancing in rights”, said Daniela.
The singer continued: “They are worried about voting for something that is offensive against Brazilian women, against Brazilian children, against the rights already acquired. This is absurd and hurts our soul”, said Daniela.
“We cannot let a sexist and disrespectful congress like this take away the rights won by women more than 40 years ago. In a democracy, when women’s rights are taken away it is because that democracy is weakened”, he concluded.
