by

In 2022, ten years after debuting the program Encontro, on Globo, Fátima Bernardes surprised half the world by announcing that she would be leaving command of the attraction, which she created. The idea of leaving the scene began to mature in 2020, when she was diagnosed with cancer. It was a blow.

“I was more afraid of what lay ahead. I had seen my sister, who is doing well, go through a difficult process with the disease. Along with me, I was diagnosed with endometrial cancer on a Thursday and, on Sunday, I had surgery. Fortunately, it was at the beginning and I didn’t need radio or chemo. The scare made me rethink my life. It was there that I decided not to work at Carnival anymore and started preparing my departure from the Encontro”, she told reporter Sofia Cerqueira, from Veja magazine.

The journalist will cover the Paris Olympics for her own YouTube channel and says that being far from the broadcaster that gave her national prominence doesn’t scare her. “There’s a lot of life outside of Globo. Of course it depends on what you’re willing to do, how each person positions themselves,” she says.

She then tells a lesson she learned from her parents: “A person’s greatest asset is their name. I take care of it, it’s my brand. I’ve always tried to make the public see me from different angles.”
