Gordon Ramsay, 57, says he is lucky to be up and walking after suffering a serious cycling accident. The chef said that the helmet saved his life and appealed to everyone to use the protective accessory when riding a bike.

Ramsey revealed in an Instagram post this Saturday (15) that the accident happened during the week while he was cycling in Connecticut, in the United States.

He said the incident really shook him and he was admitted to a hospital for care. “I’m in pain. It’s been a brutal week,” he added as he lifted his chef’s coat to reveal his heavily bruised ribs. “And I’m kind of over it. But I can’t measure the importance of wearing a helmet.”

In his caption, Ramsay explained that while he didn’t “break any bones or sustain serious injuries,” he was “a little bruised up looking like a purple potato.” The chef then reiterated that he was “grateful” to be wearing a helmet during the accident, as the item saved his life.

“It doesn’t matter how short the journey is. It doesn’t matter, you know, the fact that these helmets cost money… they’re crucial,” he said. “Even with children, it’s a short journey, they have to wear a helmet.”

In his Instagram post, Ramsay shared a photo taken before the accident. He wore a yellow and black cycling jersey, with a green helmet and yellow goggles as he posed next to a green bike.

In another photo, he shared a record of how the equipment looked after the accident. His cycling jersey was torn and his bicycle helmet was severely damaged on the front.

The chef has had a passion for cycling and has been competing in Ironman races for a few years. In 2018, he said, according to The Daily Mail, that he took up his hobbies to “get in shape.”
