A landslide in the central part of Ecuador has killed at least six people, while another thirty are missing, according to the initial tally of the victims made public by the authorities of the Latin American country on Sunday.

A “large-scale” landslide hit the town of Banios de Agua Santa, Ecuador’s Disaster Management Secretariat explained in a statement.

“I express my solidarity with all the families affected,” said Roberto Luque, the minister of public works, via X.

A low barometric pressure was over much of Central and South America yesterday, with several countries in the region issuing emergency warnings for landslides, rockfalls and flooding.

In El Salvador, the civil protection secretariat declared an alert because of the heavy rains, while in Guatemala several flights were canceled or diverted, according to the authorities.
