Winner of the Oscar for best supporting actress in 2014 for “12 Years a Slave”, Lupita Nyong’o revealed that she panicked after receiving the statuette.
In an interview with People magazine, Lupita, 41, confessed that she feared what would come next in her career. “It was my first role, and the Oscar was supposed to be the pinnacle of someone’s career. I thought, ‘Where do I go now?'” said the actress.
In addition to the hurricane of success, Lupita feared the “Oscar curse” for best supporting actress. “A lot of people who won didn’t get big projects afterward,” she said. “It was hard to deal with that and not freak out.”
The actress revealed that, at the time, she asked her colleague Emma Thompson for advice, who encouraged her to follow her heart.
“I talked to her about my fear of failure. And she was the one who encouraged me to do what I wanted, which was a play on Broadway.
“She said, ‘You know what, you have to lead your own life, not do what people recommend. You have to be your own compass and do what you feel will strengthen your talent,” Lupita recalled.
“A lot of people were against me going to Broadway because they said I should be doing an even bigger and better film. But that play made me stronger and reminded me of what I love to do, which is acting,” he said.
The show “Eclipsed” ended up earning Lupita a Tony nomination for best actress. In the following years, she made the films “Us”, “Little Monsters” and “Black Panther 2: Wakanda Forever”. She stars in the science fiction “A Quiet Place: Day One”, which opens in theaters in June.
