Jolie files for divorce from Pitt following an alleged physical altercation on the private jet returning from France to Los Angeles on September 14, 2016. The actress is seeking custody of the couple’s six children, while her attorney reports that “this decision was made for the health of the family.”
Meanwhile, Pitt told People: “I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the well-being of our children. I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this difficult time.”

Although neither ex has spoken publicly about the divorce, singer Melissa Etheridge, a friend of Pete’s, addressed what she called “completely unfounded” allegations of abuse against the actor on Andy Cohen’s show. “It breaks my heart to see such a targeted attack on Pete, putting the children ahead.”

Months after the alleged fight, the FBI begins an investigation into Pete’s behavior. Pitt then allegedly assaulted one of his children, before Jolie pushed him away and he threw her down. The report also details an allegation that Pitt allegedly spilled beer on Jolie. Although that report isn’t released until August 2022, the FBI is refusing to press charges against the actor.
