From a years-long dispute over a vineyard bought in the early years of their relationship to Pitt’s alleged estrangement from his children amid allegations of abuse.

The couple buys the Château Miraval vineyard in the south of France, although they don’t officially buy the house until 2012, when the 1,200-acre estate is sold to Jolie and Pitt for $60 million. The couple used the estate as the venue for their wedding ceremony two years later.

Jolie files for divorce from Pitt following an alleged physical altercation on the private jet returning from France to Los Angeles on September 14, 2016. The actress is seeking custody of the couple’s six children, while her attorney reports that “this decision was made for the health of the family.”

Meanwhile, Pitt told People: “I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the well-being of our children. I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this difficult time.”

Although neither ex has spoken publicly about the divorce, singer Melissa Etheridge, a friend of Pete’s, addressed what she called “completely unfounded” allegations of abuse against the actor on Andy Cohen’s show. “It breaks my heart to see such a targeted attack on Pete, putting the children ahead.”

Months after the alleged fight, the FBI begins an investigation into Pete’s behavior. While flying from France to Los Angeles, the report details that the actor allegedly grabbed Jolie by the head and pushed her against the bathroom wall, according to her. Pitt then allegedly assaulted one of his children, before Jolie pushed him away and he threw her down. The report also details an allegation that Pitt allegedly spilled beer on Jolie. Although that report isn’t released until August 2022, the FBI is refusing to press charges against the actor.

Jolie is BAFTA and Golden Globe nominated for First They Killed My Father, the film adaptation of Loung Ung’s memoir, written and directed by Jolie. The film, which received rave reviews, also won the foreign language film award at the Hollywood Film Awards.

While Jolie films “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” in London, a temporary custody order allows Pitt contact with his children, with the exception of Maddox, then 16. The Los Angeles Superior Court rules that “not having a relationship with their father would be harmful to the children.”

Pitt files a lawsuit against Jolie, claiming she illegally sold her shares in Château Miraval without his consent. Jolie’s legal team disagrees, arguing that Pitt received a letter in January 2021 saying he plans to sell her shares if the couple can’t agree on an immediate sale. The actress believes that two solutions would be better: the sale of the winery or a full buyout of her shares.
