International LGBT Pride Day is celebrated on June 28, this Friday. One day before the date, Bruno Gagliasso recalled an episode of gay censorship that occurred in the soap opera “América”, shown in 2005 on Globo.
Bruno played Junior in the soap opera, who was involved with Zeca, Erom Cordeiro’s character. He recalled that “there was all the expectation of the so-called ‘gay kiss'” and how the topic was treated at the time: “Every soap opera with LGBTQIA+ characters had this expectation. Will it now? And it never would…”.
The actor said that, in the last chapter, he and Erom actually recorded the kiss scene, but it was never aired: “Zeca and Junior in a romantic atmosphere, soundtrack and… CUT! That’s right… the scene was NEVER aired air. Even recorded, edited, everything right… Nothing like that kiss”. However, there was still hope that the record could still be released.
“Big mistake… That’s when I found out that they DELETED the scene. There’s nothing in the file. As if it never existed. I spoke to a lot of people to see if I could recover it, but nothing,” said the actor, outraged.
“I always like to remember this story because it shows how, despite the hardships, we have evolved in these twenty years. Kissing is no longer a taboo. Equal marriage is now a reality. LGBTQIA+ couples feel more comfortable expressing their affection in public” , wrote Bruno.
The first gay kiss on Globo would only be broadcast 10 years later, in “Amor à Vida”, between the characters Félix (Matheus Solano) and Nico (Thiago Fragoso). About this, the actor commented: “Our dramaturgy helped a lot in this evolution. When our soap operas naturalized affection, we also started to naturalize it in real life.”
“I wanted to bring this story back to LGBTQIA+ Pride week to celebrate the advances made in recent years. There are still many challenges, a lot of rude (and criminal) people out there, but there is also evolution and achievements. Today, that story of Zeca and Junior they would be completely different. And that kiss wouldn’t even be a big deal,” he concluded.
