Joana Fomm is not the only one who is against remakes. Veteran Maria Gladys, 84, also doesn’t like reinterpretations of classic Brazilian television dramas and the possibility of seeing her character Lucimar again in a new version of “Vale Tudo” (1988), on Globo, played by another actress, makes her feel a bit uncomfortable. “Imagine! I don’t even want to see it!” she says.
Maria Gladys fondly remembers the role of the cleaning lady in the homes of several characters in the plot. “In a soap opera, the role develops as the actor contributes. So, I have a lot to do with my character,” she describes. “I invented some things, they [os autores] They liked it, they created based on my invention… Now, a remake will be something else. And it has to be”.
She says that she classifies the remake of Gilberto Braga’s work as a “danger”. “Another ‘Vale Tudo’, I think it’s dangerous! ‘Nothing will be the same again’, as the song says. ‘Vale Tudo’, there was one, that show! It was a milestone for television and for all the actors. Now, it’s a different story”, she says.
Finally, Maria Gladys explains in an interview with the website Natelinha that she fears comparisons with the protagonists, for example: “Remake is a delicate thing. Everyone keeps comparing. ‘The other one was better’, ‘this actress doesn’t play this character well’, ‘I liked Regina Duarte’, ‘Glória Pires was a master at acting’ and other comparisons. That’s not cool”, she concludes.
