SKAI 100.3’s series of radio documentaries on European history.
In the documentary series, “Knowing European history: 19th century. Humanity in the modern era”, presented by Aris Portosalte, is dedicated to the 19th century.
How were political balances shaped in Europe during the 19th century?
How have technological innovations affected economic and social developments?
How was the diplomatic system established after the Napoleonic Wars and how did it function until the eve of World War I?
What were the interests of the Great Powers and how did their rivalries develop?
Professors Thanos Veremis and Antonis Klapsis discuss with Aris Portosalte about the old continent during the years of the first and second industrial revolutions that introduced humanity to the modern era.
On the show on Sunday 14 July the discussion began in the mid-1800s with the Crimean War, which was one of the crises of the Eastern Question that occupied European diplomacy for centuries and concerned the fate of the Ottoman Empire. The war started as Russo-Turkish but then became general as the British and French intervened in favor of the Ottoman Empire and Piedmont will gradually follow them and Austria towards the end of the war. The war would end with a victory for the Western powers and the Ottoman Empire at the expense of Russia, with most of the military operations taking place in the Crimean Peninsula. In the middle of the 19th century, Podemont turned to France and concluded an agreement based on which they proceeded to declare war on Austria. This war paved the way for the Italians to proceed with the unification of Italy. Then ten years after the Italian unification we have the German unification. During the wars of this period the interlocutors referred to many thinkers and inventors of the 19th century.
