After having his manslaughter trial thrown out, actor Alec Baldwin, 66, now wants to sue the Santa Fe County sheriff and prosecutor who handled the shooting on the set of “Rust.”
In 2021, Baldwin was handling a .45-caliber Colt revolver during a rehearsal at Bonanza Creek Ranch in New Mexico when the gun fired a bullet that killed director of photography Halyna Hutchins and injured the production director.
According to documents obtained by TMZ, the actor’s attorneys notified Sheriff Adan Mendoza and the district attorney’s office and instructed them to save all relevant information related to his trial, such as emails, text messages, hard drives, documents, records and materials related to the investigation.
Last week, a judge dismissed the case after finding that police had hidden evidence, preventing Baldwin from preparing his defense.
The attorney claims that authorities intentionally hid evidence of live ammunition on the set, which could have helped Baldwin’s argument that safety standards were not in place on the day of the incident.
Matthew Hutchins, widower of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, is expected to appeal the ruling that declared the trial overturned.
“We look forward to presenting all of the evidence to a jury and holding Baldwin accountable for his actions in the senseless death of Halyna Hutchins,” his attorney, Brian J. Panish, told Deadline.
