Three documentary“Trenches” by French War Correspondent Loop Biro, “House of Fragments” by Danish director Simon Lereng Wilmond and “F @ ck this Job” by Vera Kritsevskaya, to be screened at 24th Thessaloniki Documentary Festival -it will take place from 10 to 20 March 2022 both in nature and online- remind that where the nightmare of war is raging now, people have been living in the trenches for years. In fact, Vera Kritsevskaya, who has been living in England for the last few years, will be in Thessaloniki during the Festival.
“Logic remains silent. As a Festival, we let documentaries speak. “They have and will have – fortunately or unfortunately – a lot to say”, stressed during today’s press conference the general director of the Festival Elise Zalando, who also referred to the shadow of the pandemic.
“How to Survive a Pandemic” by David Frans is also the title of the film, an HBO production that will open this year ‘s event, in its first world premiere. The 24th FNTH will close with the film “Blind Ambition” by Warrick Ross and Rob Coe.
This year, a total of 233 short and feature-length documentaries will be screened at the historic headquarters of the institution in the Olympion and Pavlos Zannas halls and in the Port halls Frida Liappa, Tonia Marketaki, John Kassavetis, Stavros Tornakas.
The 24th FNTH is held with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Sports, the NSRF program of the Regional Development Plan of Central Macedonia and the MEDIA Program.

For “more world, international and European premieres than ever before”, said the artistic director of the Festival Orestis Andreadakis The three competition sections of the 24th Documentary Festival – the International Competition, the Newcomers section and the Film Forward section – films, which deal with the most topical issues of the time, through a critical and insightful look. The films participating in the International Competition section are vying for the FNTH Grand Prix, the Golden Alexander, as well as the Special Prize of the Jury.
“Post-reality is the central theme”
The central theme of the 24th Thessaloniki Documentary Festival seeks the new form of post-reality, Post Reality. “The war that just broke out is another version of this post-reality,” said Mr. Andreadakis.
The ten documentaries that will be screened in the main tribute map a fluid world and open the door to a new reality that removes all old certainty. Comic creator and illustrator Kanellos Cob, who signs the poster for this year’s event, was also inspired by this theme. The three spots of the event are signed by the cinematographer Angeliki Aristomenopoulou.

At the 24th FNTH, 93 short and feature Greek documentaries are screened in the three diagnostic sections – the International Competition, Newcomers and >> Film Forward, as well as in the “Open Horizons” sections of the international program, “Platform” and “On Screen” ».
Portraits of artists, the refugee-migration drama, issues of the LGBTQI + community, historical and social events that left their mark on the collective psyche, the invisible impact of the pandemic, stories of female emancipation and gender-based violence, as well as forgotten Greek are some of the topics that occupied the Greek documentary filmmakers. The advisory committee, which undertook the task of pre-selecting the films for the 24th Thessaloniki Documentary Festival, was composed of director and journalist Marianna Kakaounaki, director Andreas Siadimas and film critic and journalist Tassos Hatzievfraimidis.
For the first time this year, the institution of universally accessible screenings will be extended to the physical screenings of the Documentary Festival. The public will have the opportunity to enjoy in a universally accessible screening the film “The greengrocer” (2013) by Dimitris Koutsiambasakos who had won the Audience Award at the 15th FNTH.
“Special screenings”
The program of special screenings includes the film “The city and the city” by Sylla Tzoumerka and Christos Passalis and the documentary “Tragedy of the Aegean” (1961) by Vassilis Maros, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Asia Minor Catastrophe.
In addition, as part of the action “Chora, I see you: The 20th century of Greek cinema”, organized by the Hellenic Film Academy, 12 cinematic diamonds from the golden past of Greek documentary will be presented.
“Tributes”
This year’s event presents the work of auteur from Latvia Laila Pakalnina with her 19 short and feature films. Also, the 24th FNTH realizes spotlight in Finland creator Virpi Swatari showing 6 of its short and feature films.
“The Market of the 24th Thessaloniki Documentary Festival”
From 11 to 19 March 2022 in Warehouse C ‘, but also online, the “Documentary Market” will be held, the most important film market in Southeastern Europe, the Mediterranean and the Middle East.
In the “Documentary Market”, supported by the Creative Europe MEDIA program, prizes are given for services and cash prizes of 200,000 euros.
Seven of the films that premiere this year in the international sections of the 24th Thessaloniki Documentary Festival have been supported by the “Documentary Market” of the Festival.
“Evia Film Project”
The program of the Ministry of Culture and Sports, which is included in the reconstruction and restoration plan of Evia, has included the action of the Thessaloniki Film Festival “EVIA FILM PROJECT”. It is held with the support of the Region of Central Greece and makes Evia the center of “Green Cinema” by inaugurating the “green” action of the Thessaloniki Film Festival.
It is a pioneering development program with an environmental orientation and aims to culturally regenerate Evia through the creation of a Cinema Pole of International Interest for the Exchange of Ideas and the Market of Films focusing on the Environment, the Climate crisis and its climate.
“Podcast section”
19 Greek and English podcasts are participating in the competition section, while 15 out-of-competition podcasts will be broadcast.
This year ‘s event will be a prize-scholarship for Upcoming Audio Documentary Creator in collaboration with the Louis Lumiere School and the French Institute of Greece.
