Sean Penn ditches car and walks ‘for miles’ to leave Ukraine

by

Actor Sean Penn, 61, posted on his social media on Monday night (28), an account of his escape from Ukraine, and claimed to have abandoned the car he was in and walked “for miles” with two colleagues to enter Poland.

Penn posted a photo on Twitter walking on the side of a road, with a backpack and suitcase, next to a line of cars. “Almost all vehicles are with women and children only, most with no sign of luggage, the car being their only possessions,” she said.

Sean Penn arrived in Ukraine on Thursday (24), after the Russian invasion of the country, to record a documentary in partnership with Vice. He had been covering the escalating tension in the region since November last year, according to the Daily Mail.

During his time in Ukraine, Sean attended press conferences and spoke with representatives of the Ukrainian government, who expressed gratitude for his presence in the country, calling him more courageous than Western leaders.

“The director came to Kiev to tell the world the truth about the Russian invasion of our country. Sean Penn is among those who support Ukraine today. Our country is grateful for this display of courage and honesty,” a government statement said.

On his social media, Sean Penn had already called the war in Ukraine a “brutal mistake” and praised President Volodymyr Zelensky and the Ukrainian people who, according to him, “have risen up as historical symbols of courage and principle”.

“Ukraine is the spearhead for the democratic embrace of dreams. If we allow it to fight alone, our soul as America is lost,” said the actor. According to the UN, more than half a million Ukrainians have left the country since the Russian invasion.
