Where is Drew Barrymore now? The sweet little girl from the movie “E.T.” (1982) had a second wave of success with romantic comedies that live on in the memory of fans, such as “The Wedding Singer” (1998), alongside Adam Sandler, “Never Been Kissed” (1999) and “Love in the Game” (2005), with Jimmy Fallon.
A less informed fan might think that Drew retired in 2020, the year of her last film as a lead. Wrong: she was reborn once again as the host of her own show, The Drew Barrymore Show.
It all started in 2019, when Drew decided to record a pilot for her show with the help of powerful friends like Adam Sandler himself. Since no network was interested right away, she kept trying: she recorded online interviews with friends like Whoopi Goldberg, got some specials on Nickelodeon… until CBS, one of the biggest broadcasters in the US, understood her potential as a presenter.
It’s a shame she doesn’t speak Portuguese, because she would be a great addition to a program like Encontro on Globo or Chega Mais on SBT.
It’s an old cliché to say that a celebrity is so cool and approachable that they seem like “just like us.” In Drew’s case, however, the phrase applies without exaggeration. She’s the queen of spontaneity. From her couch, celebrities reveal things they’ve never spoken about before.
Hollywood actors and actresses see her as a dear colleague, not an intimidator, and they speak out. Anne Hathaway (from “The Devil Wears Prada”) recalled the time she woke up from a party at her apartment and found a drunk Irishman sleeping in her living room.
Sam Rockwell, Oscar winner for “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” confessed that the day he met his current wife, he had scheduled a second date for the same day—and she noticed. Andie MacDowell, the eternal diva of the comedy “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” said that today, single at 66, she feels relieved because people have finally stopped asking her if she has a boyfriend.
Drew’s prestige is such that two months ago she hosted Kamala Harris, the country’s vice president and current Democratic presidential candidate to defeat Donald Trump. Kamala recounted in detail what her first “blind date” with her husband, lawyer Douglas Emhoff, was like.
By the way: a friend set up the meeting and asked her not to Google Douglas’ name, but she disobeyed and looked through all of his photos. When she got into the car, she discovered that he was a terrible driver. Today, her relationship with her stepchildren is so good that they call her “Momala” (a mix of mother and Kamala).
The proof that this “people like us” thing is not just an image construct is in the posts that Drew Barrymore publishes. Instead of living in a mansion, she lives in a very ordinary, middle-class house. Fans were surprised by the small size of her kitchen and a four-burner stove like any mortal’s in a video in which she appeared to be completely cleaning out her drawers, without the help of any servant. Her living room has only one small piece of furniture supporting a 32-inch TV.
The house may be simple, but the career of a presenter and host has its luxuries. Following in the footsteps of Oprah Winfrey, Drew already has a quarterly magazine under her own name, as well as her own brand of makeup and cosmetics.
In recent years, only one thing has seriously tarnished its image: during the film and TV writers’ stalemate, it chose to continue with the fourth season of the show, going against the union’s decision, which caused its main writers to resign.
Some colleagues have been angry with her ever since, but the episode doesn’t seem to have affected the more than 1 million fans who still watch her show daily.
The Drew Barrymore Show is not shown in Brazil, but if you are interested, there are many moments from the show available on YouTube and on the show’s Instagram profile (@thedrewbarrymoreshow).
