Exactly how the pyramids of Egypt were built by the engineers of one of the world’s earliest known civilizations has long been the subject of controversy within the scientific community.
The prevailing theory was that they used a system of ropes and sledges to carry stones to the top, as the pyramid was built from the ground up, layer by layer.
But one new study, according to MailOnline, it shows that the oldest pyramid in Egypt, the Pyramid of Djoser, was built 4,700 years ago using a “hydraulic lift”.
“The ancient Egyptians are famous for pioneering and mastering hydraulic systems through canals for irrigation purposes and for transporting huge stones,” the team explained.
“Now, it opens up a new line of research, the use of hydraulic power to erect the massive structures built by the pharaohs.”
The new theory is presented in a study led by Xavier Landreau, president of Paleotechnic, an archaeological research institute in Paris, France.
The researchers studied historical records and satellite photos of the area to interpret the features that support their argument.
“We found that the internal architecture of the step pyramid is consistent with a never-before-reported hydraulic lift mechanism,” say Landreau and his colleagues.
The hydraulic system included the management of water from the Gisr el-Mudir and a series of structures to control floods and direct water into the inner tunnels of the pyramid.
What we know about the Djoser pyramid
It was the first pyramid built by the ancient Egyptians. It is a landmark in the design of royal tombs, not only for its architectural innovations and extensive use of stone but also for the efforts made to protect the burial of its occupant. It was named after Pharaoh Zoser.
