Her Greek audience Fran Limbovic does not fit in one or two rooms. Seats for the second event were sold out within a short time.
In order for everyone to be able to watch the long-awaited discussion of the unconventional New York writer and critic with the Director of Culture of the Onassis Foundation, Aphrodite Panagiotakou, Stegi makes the discussion accessible to everyone (on 15/3) live, exclusively on onassis.org.
Unconventional, witty and with a caustic humor, a passionate smoker and reader, a writer who has had a writer’s block for decades – as she admits -, a collaborator of Andy Warhol (without liking him), provocative and grumpy.
Fran Limbovich talks about the modern cultural landscape around the world, life in the world’s metropolises and the importance of being yourself today.
In an age full of countless experts and TV personalities, Libowicz stands out as one of the most insightful social commentators. Her essays and interviews offer her responsive views on current events and the media – but also on anything that bothers her, such as tourists, airport luggage compartments, shaving lotions, rollerblading adults, children French or excessive tanning.
The New York Times Book Review called her an “important humorist of the classical tradition.” A true representative of urban cool, Limbovic satirizes cultural things, and many consider her the spiritual heir of Dorothy Parker.
Limbovic did some odd jobs, such as taxi driver, seat belt and apartment cleaner (“with a little expertise in Venetian blinds”), before Andy Warhol hired her as an Interview columnist. A short passage through Mademoiselle followed. Her first book, a collection of essays entitled “Metropolitan Life”, became a bestseller, as did her second collection, “Social Studies”.
Her prose, ironic, sly, cold, sarcastic, bitter, euphoric and sardonic, is extremely amusing. The texts from her two books were published in the collective edition The Fran Lebowitz Reader, with a new prologue by the author. This collection has been translated and published in nine languages, including French, Korean, Russian, Spanish and Turkish. Limbowicz has also written the children’s book “Mr. Chas and Lisa Sue Meet the Pandas ».
Between 2001 and 2007, Limbovich regularly starred in the drama TV series “Law & Order” as Judge Janis Goldberg. He also starred in Martin Scorsese’s “The Wolf of Wall Street” (2013).
With a rare gift for storytelling, she is often invited to various talk shows, including those of Jimmy Fallon, Conan O’Brien and Bill Maher.
In an interview with the Paris Review, she stated: “I’m not a nervous person. I’m not afraid when I go out on TV. I am afraid only when I write. “When I sit at my desk, I feel like most people would if they were on TV.”
He has also appeared in various documentaries, including episodes of the American Experience series about New York, as well as Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures (2016), Regarding Susan Sontag (2014) and Superstar: The Life and Times of Andy Warhol ( 1990), among others. In 2010, Martin Scorsese directed a HBO-based documentary about Limbovich entitled “Public Speaking.”
A limited-edition documentary series, “Pretend It’s a City,” also directed by Martin Scorsese, premiered on Netflix in 2021 and was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Documentary or Non-Fiction Series. In 2021 she was awarded the Comprehensive Offer Award at the Forte dei Marmi Festival della Satira.
In 2008, she was inducted into Vanity Fair Magazine’s annual Hall of Fame list for the world’s top costume style. Limbovich lives in New York, as she does not think she would be allowed to live anywhere else.
The discussion will take place in English with simultaneous interpretation in Greek and in Greek Sign Language.
