Marvel’s “Black Panther” actress and Beyoncé collaborator Connie Chiume has died at the age of 72.

The South African actor’s family announced the news in an Instagram post yesterday. “The Chiume family is saddened to inform you of the passing of internationally acclaimed award-winning actress Connie Chiume,” the statement said.

Connie Chiume, has died at the age of 72 at Garden City Hospital in Johannesburg, her family says and is asking for privacy during this difficult time.

The award-winning actress has starred in several South African television series, including Rhythm City, Zone 14 and Gomora.

In the 2018 film Black Panther, Chiyume starred as Zawavari – a member of the Wakandan Tribal Council. In the 2022 sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever he replaced Zuri played by Forest Whitaker as the elder of Wakanda.

She also became known for her appearances in Beyoncé’s musical film based on the Disney musical film The Lion King, in which she played Simba’s mother, Sarabi.

Her most recent role was in the thriller Heart of the Hunter, released earlier this year, and she also appeared in the TV series Soon Comes Night in February.

Chiume won several awards, including the NTVA Avanti Award for Best Actress in a Drama Series for her role in Soul City in 2000. Later in 2009, she received a South African Film and Television Award (SAFTA) for Best Actress in a Drama for her role as Stella Moloi in the family drama Zone 14;
