The small post-Byzantine church of the Holy Apostles, which had no mural decoration, inside the enclosure, has suffered serious damage
The autopsies were completed yesterday, according to the Ephorate of Antiquities of Eastern Attica, on the one hand in the organized archaeological sites and on the other hand to the Museum and scattered individual visible and/or standing monuments, within the limits of municipalities of Oropos, Marathonos, Dionysos and Pentelis, affected by the fires in Attica:
- At Municipality of Oropos (D.E. Kapandritiou), on Kotroni hill, where it is believed that the acropolis of the ancient Aphidna was located and where, in recent years, important architectural remains have been discovered, the archaeological site it did not suffer the slightest wear and tearalthough the fire consumed the slopes of the hill.
- At Marathon Municipalityin the Archaeological Museum of Marathon, together with the mounds of Vranas and Plataea located within the museum’s enclosure, in the organized and visitable archaeological sites of the municipality (archaeological sites of Ramnountos, Tomb of Athenai, sanctuary of Egyptian gods, in Brexiza of Nea Makris), the fire did not cause any problems.
- In the proclaimed, expropriated and fenced archaeological site of Oinoi Marathonos most of the vegetation has been burnedin the surroundings of the Byzantine tower of Oinoi. The small post-Byzantine church of the Holy Apostles, which had no mural decoration, inside the enclosure, has suffered serious damageon the roof and in the modern plastering of its interior walls.
- The newer roof and the interior of the post-Byzantine church of Agios Athanasios, in Kalendzi Marathonos, have also suffered significant damage (comp. Fig. 3, 4). The frescoes were not damaged.
- At Municipality of Dionysosthe fenced archaeological area (Ikarion), (shrines of Dionysus and Apollo, theater area, etc.) and the burial enclosure, apart from the enclosure, have not been damaged. The surrounding green space also remained unscathed.
- At Municipality of Penteliin the areas of the quarries, at the beginning of Lithagogias street, in the Amomo cave (Daveli cave) and in the two temples located at its entrance, no damages have been noted except slightly, in a lintel located on the ground. Part of Lithagogias Street, in a more southern position, near the church of the Holy Assumptions, has been blackened by the fire. The condition is completely reversible.
The other individual monuments were not damaged. In many cases the surrounding vegetation has been burned.
