The “Temple of Wings,” an epic Greco-Roman mansion and historic Berkeley landmark overlooking San Francisco Bay, is for sale for $5 million.

The grand mansion was bought in 1994 for $950,000 by billionaire Gordon Getty, the fourth child of oil tycoon J. Paul Getty, and his wife Ann, and they are now selling it.

Tucked away in the green hills of Berkeley, the ultra-luxurious residence – Gordon Getty’s “Greek temple” according to the Wall Street Journal – is a blend of luxury and high aesthetics and is considered one of the most historic sites in the US.

What really stands out is the impressive peristyle with 16 Corinthian style columns and a stunning view of the city.

“Although it is time to move on, ‘Temple of Wings’ will always represent a sanctuary where beauty has time to rest before it blossoms,” the 90-year-old owner said in a statement to the Wall Street Journal.

For the Getty family, it was their “personal oasis,” says the Robb Report.

In 2022, two years after his wife’s death, Getty decided to hand over the contents of the house and his unique collections to Christie’s, to be auctioned. Proceeds benefit the Ann and Gordon Getty Foundation for the Arts.

“Without them, the house is ready for a new generation to take over,” his spokesman said.
