Beyoncé has threatened to issue a “cease and desist” order against Donald Trump’s campaign for misusing a song. The legal action is a kind of injunction requiring the candidate to immediately stop using the track.
The song “Freedom”, which is part of the album “Lemonade”, released in 2016 by the singer, was used without permission as the soundtrack for a video published by Steven Cheung, Trump’s campaign advisor.
In the video, posted on X last Tuesday (20), the Republican candidate appears disembarking from his plane in Michigan to the sound of Beyoncé. The track is the same one used by Kamala Harris in several of her rallies — with the artist’s permission.
According to Rolling Stone, Beyoncé’s lawyers threatened to notify Trump’s campaign. After the news was published on Wednesday (21), the video was deleted from social media. The singer has not made any public statements about the matter.
While Beyoncé has not officially endorsed Kamala’s campaign, she has expressed support for the Democratic Party on several occasions, including in 2013 when she sang the national anthem at Obama’s inauguration. In 2020, she publicly endorsed Joe Biden’s candidacy.
Beyoncé’s mother, Tina Knowles, is an outspoken supporter of Kamala. The 70-year-old fashion designer posted a photo with the Democratic candidate about a month ago on her Instagram profile, celebrating the official announcement of her candidacy.
Earlier this month, the Trump campaign was criticized by Céline Dion for using her hit “My Heart Will Go On” at a rally in Montana.
“Today, Céline Dion’s management team and her record label, Sony Music Entertainment Canada Inc., became aware of the unauthorized use of Celine Dion performing ‘My Heart Will Go On’ at a Donald Trump and JD Vance campaign rally in Montana,” said a statement shared on the artist’s social media.
