Tribute “The Woman in Rebetiko” – August 28-September 1, 2024
From the historic tavern of “Tempelis”, on the steps of Vrontados, the 8th Rebetiko Festival “The Syra of Markos Vamvakaris” starts today, Wednesday 28/08. The events will start at 20:50 with a delightful Karagiozi performance by Yiannis Galanos from Samos who, despite his young age, has a deep knowledge of the techniques and figures of the shadow theater. It will be followed at 21:30 by the People’s Orchestra of the Small Music Ensemble, under the direction and coordination of Dimitris Maragos, who will present an evening full of songs that refer to the emancipation of women, through rebetiko and folk songs of the time.
The events of the festival will continue in the following days in Tarsanas (29-31/8) and will culminate with a concert at the spring of Agios Athanasios in Ano Syros on Saturday, September 1. At the same time, one can visit the Exhibition of Folk Musical Instruments in the Vati hall, while on Saturday 31/8 there will be a Music Workshop on the topic “Vocal performance in Smyrnaic and Rebetiko song”, with Ifigenia Ioannou.
