In a recent interview, the 53-year-old actress explains what drove her away from the entertainment industry in recent years
The 80s and 90s may have been the peak for the once rising Hollywood star, Winona Ryderwith leading roles in films such as “Heathers” and the “Scissors”, however he chose to step away from the limelight in the early 2000s.
In a recent interview, the 53-year-old actress revealed how her “difficult experiences on set” led her to change the way she sees things in the entertainment industry.
“I had some difficult experiences with some people who sexually harassed me,” she said, “And then it happened again in my 30s. It may not have been indecency, but it was certainly incredibly indecent and intense. I was lucky because I was famous, so it didn’t happen as much as if I were a bio-wrestler.”
Ryder explained that she felt like she was “negotiating” and wondered what would happen if she openly expressed her annoyance, adding that she was “working it through” in an instance where she was dealing with a guy who was “extremely slimy”.
The turning point for her was when she described these experiences to Jenna Ortega, her co-star in “Beetlejuice“, where he realized “My Christ, it’s all shit”.
“I think that’s what completely alienated me from making movies. All the great actors have always told me that when you stop thinking it’s all amazing, that’s when you have to leave,” he explained. “I took it to heart, really.”
Further explaining the incidents of harassment she experienced, Ryder described other men on set as “rude slobbers thrown at her”. She said she “might be managing it at the time, but it felt like they were invading my personal space, especially when they were touching me.”
It is recalled that the role-revelation for Ryder was Lydia Dietz in the first film “Bumblebee” in 1988 at the age of 15. He later starred in other films such as “Little Ladies“, “Tthe Girl I Left Behind” and “Alien: Rebirth,” before she was banished from Hollywood after she was arrested for shoplifting $5,500 worth of clothing in 2001.
