Why does he think his adventure was a gift?
About the great adventure he went through with his health 12 years ago, he spoke Argyris Angelou.
The beloved actor who became known to the general public from the role of Fotis in “Para Pente”, in an interview with Sissy Menegatou and the On Time newspaper, revealed that in 2012 he entered the hospital from overwork and that shook him for good. Along the way, he considers that it was “God’s gift” in the end.
-Have you ever felt that you exceeded your limits and were afraid because something happened to your health?
“Yes, it happened in 2012 and I stopped for eight months. I entered the hospital from overwork. I got through it all. I was working a lot, and at that time I didn’t particularly value myself, my diet, or anything. I mean, I didn’t prioritize and I didn’t take care of myself. So, in the frenzy and the rush of “now that the ball is rolling let’s get it all done”, I overestimated my strength.
At some point I stopped eating normally and without realizing it the “ball” took me down. And when I realized it, it was too late. I hit… red. There, on the red, I had to stop to recover my strength. When I came back, I started to prioritize. I started to love me a little more, to take care of me, to look for my limits, to love my limits and to set limits, because before I was saying “yes” to everyone and then I was saying “yes” to what I really wanted to do.
You can’t please everyone. In the past, that was my anxiety: to please everyone. Let everyone say: “Well done, he catches everything. He is good, useful.” Let everyone have a good conversation. And it was in vain, because I ended up losing myself through it.
During that period I had two or three sessions with a psychologist, because my doctor advised me to do so, as he had not understood whether I felt the seriousness of my situation. The psychologist understood immediately that I was fully aware of what I was doing. And when he asked me how I wanted to proceed, I told him that I wanted to close my house and go to my mom and dad in Chalkida.
To put down switches, sit there and recover my strength and think about how I should love myself. He immediately replied “that’s what you have to do and we’ll talk again later”.
I closed my house, I left for Chalkida, I lived with my dad for eight months, just before he “left” so nothing is a coincidence because during that time I talked with my dad, ate with him, we dug the garden, his I said things I had never said to him.”
Therefore, I considered it like a “gift from God” what happened to me then. When I came back to Athens, I started the madness again, I just knew my limits, how far I can go”
-Have you had a hard time on the stage?
“A lot has happened to me, but the adrenaline of the stage is such that you overcome them. I’ve played at my father’s funeral, I’ve played sick, I’ve hit the stage but I carried on, it’s not something I’m a hero for doing it. It’s kind of a natural consequence because of the adrenaline that the scene has. I don’t consider myself important because I did it.”
-When you lost your father, did you play the same night?
“Yes, it was 2013. I remember they called me from the production to cancel the show. I refused. I don’t know what that power was, but I remember that when I went to the theater, it was a… breath for me, that helped me to go on so that I wouldn’t be suffocated by all this sadness, the sudden change in my life.
I mean, then I remember that show as a pleasant break. Not with pain and sorrow. And I think I got the sweetest and most tender hugs that night from both my colleagues and the public, some of whom knew.
My brother was also in the square, who had come to support me along with my nieces. It didn’t even cross my mind to cancel a show, without judging if someone felt the need to distance themselves. That’s how I worked. It doesn’t mean that’s the norm.”
