Malia Obama, daughter of former US President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama, appeared at the 50th annual Deauville American Film Festival to promote her directorial debut, a short film ‘The Heart’.

The former ‘first daughter’ wearing an outfit designed by Vivienne Westwood walked the red carpet for the opening ceremony of the festival hosted in Deauville, France on Friday.

She wore a plaid dress, consisting of a light red, white and gray corset top and a blue and white skirt.

Obama paired her street style look with knee-high leather boots.

The daughter of former US President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama told reporters: “I’m so excited. I’ve never done anything like that, so [είμαι] a little terrified but mostly excited.”

Earlier this year, Malia’s project debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah.

What is her film about?

The Harvard graduate’s short film tells the story of a man grieving the loss of his mother as he confronts her last wish. “The film is about lost objects and lonely people and forgiveness and regret,” he said in a “Meet the Artist” video. “But I also think he’s working hard to reveal where there can be tenderness and closeness in these things.”

Malia added that she hopes the film will help viewers “feel a little less alone, or at least remind them not to forget what people they are.”

The first-time director also chose to remove her famous surname from the film’s credits, citing only Malia Ann.

Malia’s decision to keep her last name out of her professional endeavors has drawn a lot of criticism, but she has received support from “View” co-host Whoopi Goldberg.
